A video image wider than the standard 1.33 (4:3) aspect ratio. When referring to DVD or HDTV, widescreen usually indicates a 1.78 (16:9) aspect ratio.

My first-ever 3-D movie experience was a revival screening of The Creature from the Black Lagoon that my mom took me to as a kid. The cardboard glasses with the blue and red lenses didn't really sit properly on my tyke-sized nose and I couldn't follow the plot, but man do I remember that scaly monstrosity appearing to pop right off the screen. Thanks a lot for the nightmares, mom.
